Mayor directs IMC staff: Be ready to maximise rainwater conservation

A crucial review meeting on the Jal Ganga Conservation Campaign was held on Saturday to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season.

During the session, mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav reviewed the work done so far under the Jal Ganga Conservation Campaign and emphasised the need to swiftly complete the large-scale cleaning and conservation of all wells, stepwells, and ponds across the city.

He instructed that where necessary, restoration work should also be undertaken to ensure effective rainwater collection and groundwater recharge. The mayor stressed that before the onset of the monsoon, a massive campaign must be launched to install rainwater harvesting systems and create water recharge shafts, aiming to significantly raise the groundwater levels.

He further directed that the campaign should involve not only public representatives but also active participation from aware citizens, transforming it into a public movement for water conservation.

“Encroachments be removed immediately from the catchment areas of all city ponds, and channels feeding water into these ponds be cleaned and repaired without delay. Pre-monsoon surveys should be conducted, and the construction of recharge shafts at as many sites as possible should be prioritised,” said the mayor in the meeting.

Commissioner ShivamVerma added that, alongside efforts for water conservation, measures must be taken to prevent rainwater runoff. He proposed that public awareness programmes should be conducted across legislative assembly segments, zones, and wards with the cooperation of various organisations to maximise citizen involvement in the campaign.
