Indore: International Conference On Reducing Maternal And Infant Mortality Begins Today

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): India as the world’s most populous nation, continues to struggle with high infant mortality during pregnancy and childbirth. In response, a two-day international conference will begin on Saturday at IRCAD-India, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS), focusing on reducing maternal and neonatal deaths.

Organised by Ayushya – Centre for Foetal Medicine in collaboration with national and international medical bodies, the event includes participation from gynaecologists, neonatologists, anatomists, foetal medicine experts and nurses. ‘Father of Foetal Medicine’ Prof Kypros Nicolaides will join the event virtually.

Chief organiser Dr Shweta Bhandari said, ‘Every birth matters. This conference focuses on both clinical care and preparing healthcare professionals emotionally and psychologically.’ Dr Anita Kaul, Clinical Director at Apollo Centre for Foetal Medicine, emphasised on compassionate communication.

‘We aim to train professionals not just in diagnostics but also in empathetic engagement with grieving families,’ she said. Dr Tamkeen Khan of Aligarh Muslim University highlighted the need for respectful dialogue and support after pregnancy loss.

The conference includes three workshops and nine expert lectures, covering foetal monitoring, CTG in labour, perinatal autopsy and grief management. Experts from India, the US and the UK will conduct sessions.
