Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), constructed at a cost of Rs 500 crore, is being dismantled following a directive from the High Court.
The 11.5 km corridor is being removed in phases, starting with high-traffic areas like Shivaji Vatika and the GPO intersection, to minimise disruption. With the removal of central bus stops, the Atal Indore City Transport Service Limited (AICTSL) plans to construct new curbside shelters on both sides of the road.
To fund this initiative without burdening public finances, the AICTSL is collaborating with advertising agencies. These agencies will build the bus stops and in return, gain advertising rights at the locations, allowing them to recover their investments.
Each new bus shelter is estimated to cost between Rs 7 to Rs 8 lakh and will have standardized designs, providing commuters with seating and protection from the elements. The initiative aims to enhance passenger comfort while ensuring financial sustainability.
The dismantling of the BRTS is expected to generate approximately Rs 3.37 crore from the sale of scrap material, including steel railings and other components. This revenue will offset the costs associated with the demolition and construction of new infrastructure.
As Indore transitions away from the BRTS, these developments mark a significant shift in the city’s approach to public transportation, focusing on modernising infrastructure through innovative funding models.
