'Parliament Is Supreme, Elected Representatives Are Ultimate Masters': V-P Jagdeep Dhankhar Doubles Down Criticism On Judicial 'Overreach'

New Delhi: Vice president Jagdeep Dhankar on Tuesday doubled down its attack on judicial 'overreach'. While speaking at Delhi University, Dhankar said that "Parliament is supreme" and elected representatives are "ultimate masters.

“Public representatives are severely accountable on occasion through elections. A Prime Minister who imposed an Emergency was held accountable. Democracy is for the people and is a repository of safeguarding, it is that of elected representatives," Dhankar said at the event as quoted by News18.

Dhankhar's Remarks:

“Elected representatives are the ultimate masters as to what constitutional content will be. There is no visualisation in the Constitution of any authority above parliament. Parliament is Supreme. It is as supreme as every individual in the country," he added.

Notably, the Supreme Court had recently prescribed a three-month timeline for the President to decide on bills reserved by governors for her nod. Reacting to the judgment, Dhankhar had said that the judiciary cannot play the role of a "super parliament" and get into the domain of the executive.

Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey raised concerns over the Supreme Court directives.

Last week, Dhankhar mounted a trenchant critique on judicial 'overreach', questioning the legality of judges' immunity from criminal investigation and calling for an urgent probe into the alleged discovery of cash at a Delhi High Court judge’s residence. He also described Article 142 of the Constitution as a “nuclear missile against democratic forces,” demanding a structural relook at how substantial constitutional matters are decided in court.
