Reasi: Days after suspending the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, India on Monday closed all gates at the Salal Dam on the Chenab River to stop the flow of water to Pakistan.

After the development, there is a significant drop in water levels in the river Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. Locals lauded the Centre's decision to close the gates of the Salal dam.

Gates Of Salal Dam Closed:

"This is a very big achievement. This step by the government is very good. Our government is giving Pakistan a befitting reply in a lot of ways. We are all with the government," a local told ANI.

"We are happy that the government has stopped the flow of water to Pakistan. The way they killed our tourists in Pahalgam, Pakistan deserves a befitting reply. We are with the government in whatever decision they take," another local said.

Meanwhile, India has stanched the flow of water through the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River and is planning similar measures at the Kishanganga Dam on the Jhelum River, reported PTI citing a source.

Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) IT cell chief Amit Malviya also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the closure of all gates of the Salar dam.

"It takes political will to make tough decisions in India's interest, and Prime Minister Modi has demonstrated that through his actions. This is the muscular Modi Doctrine, firm and unwavering in its fight against terrorism. Water and the blood of our citizens cannot flow together. Let that be clear," Malviya posted on X.

Notably, on Friday, the water level in the Chenab River increased following heavy rainfall in Jammu's Akhnoor.

After the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India announced a series of diplomatic sanctions against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. After India's announcement, Pakistan called it an "act of war".

Five to six terrorists opened fire on tourists at Baisaran meadows near Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22. At least 26 people, including a local pony guide, were killed in the terror attack. After the attack, India downgraded diplomatic relations with Pakistan.
