Author Amish Tripathi and comedian Kunal Kamra were engaged in an 'X' spat over Sati practice. The entire matter started after Tripathi shared a video on X, Titled, “Sati - Fact or Fiction?”. Reacting to the author's post, OLA CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said that it was hard to find any proof of the sati practice in India.
“It’s hard to find any proof of Sati but very easy to find proof of witch burning in medieval Europe’. Amazing podcast,” Aggarwal wrote. Kamra was not impressed by the OLA CEO’s reaction and took a sarcastic jibe at him.
Aggarwal's Tweet:
Kamra's Reaction:
“Raja Ram Mohan Roy fought against the practice of Sati; it was abolished in the year 1829. The last documented case of Sati in India was as recent as 1987. Please focus on your automobiles being immobile…,” Kamra wrote.
In another tweet, the comedian took a dig at Aggarwal and asked him when OLA service issue be resolved. "“Hey @bhash while I have your attention can you let everyone know when would Ola service issues be resolved?” Kamra said.
Tripathi's And Kamra's Spat On X::
After Kamra’s reply, Tripathi waded into the discussion. He shared a document of the the 1829 Sati Abolishment Act to clarify his stand which he mentioned in the video.
“Kunal (@kunalkamra88 ), I normally never get into twitter debates. They generate more heat than light. But since you are attacking @bhash basis a video that I made, I thought it would be appropriate for me to clarify. I would invite you to read the 1829 Sati Abolishment Act you referred to,” the author wrote.
“Also, if I may make a suggestion... There is a value to manners, even when debating. You will find you make a much greater impact if the words are polite and the tone remains calm,” he added.
Replying to Tripathi's this tweet, Kamra wrote, "Don’t demean the struggles in our history to justify the politics of today’s ruling regime. Hinduism is regulated by practices not a book — the practice was prevalent & reformist women & men fought against it. Their struggles are well documented. The first documented case was in BC era & the last one was in 1987… There’s a reason why mythology & history are two different sections in a bookstore; let’s not confuse the two."
Social Media Reactions:
The X spat received mixed reactions, some criticised Kamra, while others schooled Tripathi.
“Manners and Kamra can never used in the same sentence,” an X user wrote.
“We should stop taking these vulgar comedians seriously. No one care about their opinions, most of them will do or say anything for cheap publicity,” another user wrote.
“Amish ji, your work on fictional books are based on mythology and try to deliberately link with history. This is not ethical for any writer. Please just stop mixing mythology with history. Your knowledge may be limited,” an X user wrote.
Kamra And Aggarwal's X Feud In October Last Year:
Last year also, an X spat erupted between Kamra and Aggarwal. In October 2024, the comedian reacted to a post alleging that OLA service centres are not addressing customer complaints. Instead, it was claimed they have hired bouncers to handle customers. An internet user shared a post, tagging Kunal Kamra, and claimed that OLA has recruited bouncers at all service centres and has stopped accepting more scooters for repairs.
Kunal Kamra responded to the post, calling on journalists to fact-check the claim. He said, "Please, can a journalist fact-check this? If true, this is truly unique – Sales team for sales & bouncers for after-sales."
The online feud between Kunal Kamra and Bhavish Aggarwal intensified after the comedian reacted to a post shared by the OLA founder. Aggarwal had posted an update showcasing the gigafactory, to which Kunal Kamra responded with an image of OLA scooters waiting for service. This sparked a public exchange, with Bhavish Aggarwal replying to Kamra by calling him a "failed comedian" and sarcastically offering him a job at the OLA factory.
