'Kicked Repeatedly, Pushed': TMC MLA Humayun Kabir Assaults Official Of West Bengal University Of Health Sciences; Incident Caught On Camera

Kolkata: Ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir from Debra allegedly assaulted Assistant Registrar of West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata. The incident was caught on CCTV installed in WBUHS official Pralay Chakraborty's office. The video of the alleged assault has surfaced online.

The video shows Kabir starting to assault Chakraborty after everyone in the office had left. In the viral video, it could be seen that an altercation broke out between the two. As the argument escalated, Kabi got up from his chair and advanced aggressively towards Charaborty and started kicking him.

The video also shows that when the assistant registrar was leaving the room, the TMC MLA tried to stop him. Chakraborty managed to go out of his office and stood at the door. Notably, no other official intervened in the matter.

The incident drew flak from opposition parties in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hit out at the TMC after the video surfaced online. The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, called the incident "shameful".

"The video shows this individual brazenly kicking (with his shoes on), punching, and harassing a Government Official, forcing Shri Chakraborty to flee his workplace to escape the violence. This shameful episode is captured for all to see, yet the silence from the Health Department is deafening," Adhikari said in an X post.

"Is this the exemplary governance Mamata Banerjee promised? Does being a Trinamool MLA grant a free pass to unleash violence on public servants? This is not just an attack on an individual but an assault on the dignity of our institutions and the rule of law. From harassing common citizens to now targeting government officials, the Trinamool leaders seem to believe they are above accountability. This is the true face of Mamata Banerjee’s misrule, a state where power and privilege trample justice and decency," he added.

Notably, Kabir is an ex-IPS officer. He joined the TMC in February 2021. Kabir won the 2021 West Bengal Asembly polls from the Debra constituency.
