IndiGo Suspends Passenger From Flying On Its Flights For Slapping Co-Traveller Mid-Air; VIDEO Viral

Kolkata, August 2: In the latest development in the IndiGo slapgate incident, IndiGo Airlines on Saturday announced the suspension of a passenger from flying on any of its flights after a viral video showed him slapping a co-passenger during a flight from Mumbai to Silchar via Kolkata. The airline said the decision was taken in line with regulatory provisions to discourage unruly behaviour and ensure the safety and dignity of passengers and crew.

The incident occurred on IndiGo flight 6E-2387 on Friday (August 1) when 32-year-old Hussain Ahmed Majumdar from Assam reportedly suffered a panic attack mid-air. He was being escorted off the aircraft by cabin crew after landing when a co-passenger suddenly got up and slapped him. The video, widely shared on social media, also shows crew members trying to defuse the situation while another passenger objected to the assault.

In a statement, IndiGo said, “At IndiGo, the safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our foremost priority. Following due diligence, the incident involving an unruly customer has been formally reported to the relevant authorities for necessary action. In line with our commitment to discourage such unruly behavior onboard flights, the individual has been suspended from flying on any IndiGo flights, in accordance with regulatory provisions.”

Earlier, the airline had condemned the act, calling such behaviour “completely unacceptable,” and confirmed that the passenger who slapped Majumdar was handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) upon arrival in Kolkata. The crew had followed all Standard Operating Procedures during the incident.

Meanwhile, the case has taken a concerning turn as Majumdar, the man assaulted in the incident, has gone missing. His family in Assam claims he never reached his destination in Silchar and that his phone has remained switched off since the flight landed. A missing person complaint has been lodged at Udarbond Police Station in Cachar district, and CISF and airport authorities have been informed.

IndiGo reiterated its commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for passengers and said it will continue to assist the authorities in the investigation.
