The makers of Sardaar Ji 3, starring Diljit Dosanjh, have issued an official statement following severe backlash over the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the film. The criticism comes in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which led to renewed calls for a ban on Pakistani artists in Indian entertainment.

Makers issue official statement

In a statement released on Tuesday (June 24), the production team clarified, "This is to bring to everyone's kind notice that the film named, Sardaar Ji 3, was shot well before the prevailing situation that our country is facing now and it was never ever the case that any Pakistani artist was signed or was engaged after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam."

Addressing the growing criticism, the makers opened up about their respect for public sentiment and added, "We stand united with our country and our fellow countrymen during this sensitive time. Considering the same, we had decided not to release the film or any of its promotional content in India until the situation becomes opportune."

Soon after the makers shared the statement on Instagram, several users extended their support to the upcoming film. However, others lashed out at them and stated that they could have 'replaced' Hania or 'removed' her scenes from the film.

A major controversy erupted after Diljit shared the trailer of Sardaar Ji 3 on social media. It also triggered outrage and calls for a boycott. Many users accused the team of being 'insensitive' and 'shameless' as they continued promoting a film featuring a Pakistani actress amidst national mourning and anger.

Diljit Dosanjh reacts to the controversy

Diljit, who has been at the receiving end of severe backlash, ended his silence on the controversy and stated that the entire film was shot before the Pahalgam attack and that a lot of money was at stake.

During an interview with BBC Asian Network, the actor-singer said, "Jab yeh film bani thi tab situation theek tha. We shot this in February. Then a lot of things happened which were beyond our control. The producers knew that the film would not release in India, and so they decided to release it overseas. Producers ka bahot paisa laga hai."

"Even when I signed the film, everything was fine. Now, the situation is not in our hands. So if the producers want to release it abroad, I support them," Diljit added.

About the controversial film

Besides Diljit and Hania, Sardaar Ji 3 also stars Neeru Bajwa, Jasmin Bajwa, Manav Vij, Gulshan Grover and others in key roles. The film is directed by Amar Hundal and written by Rakesh Dhawan. Diljit has co-produced the film with Gunbir Singh Sidhu and Manmord Sidhu.

Sardaar Ji 3 is slated to release overseas on June 27.
