'Save My Kid': Dia Mirza Says Son Avyaan Had Hole In His Intestine & Underwent 'Life-Saving' Surgery 36 Hours After Birth
Dia Mirza opened up about her life-threatening pregnancy at 39, revealing she developed a bacterial infection likely due to appendix surgery. She recalled if her baby hadn't been delivered in time, neither would have survived. Her son weighed 810 grams at birth. "He had a hole in his intestine and underwent surgery. They put a stoma on him — they pulled the intestine out of the body," she added.

Actress Dia Mirza opened up about her life-threatening pregnancy journey at the age of 39. She revealed that her son, Avyaan Azaad Rekhi, was delivered in a 'crazy situation,' as she had developed an acute bacterial infection—something she believes may have been a side effect of the appendix surgery she underwent during the fifth month of her pregnancy. By the end of the sixth month, she discovered that her placenta was hemorrhaging and her body was going into sepsis.
The actress recalled that if her baby hadn't been delivered in time, neither of them would have survived. "It was quite scary," she said. In a recent interview with Official People of India, Dia shared that she had pleaded with her gynaecologist to save her child. " He was born and immediately taken to the NICU. He weighed just 810 grams, and I was on IV antibiotics," she added.

Further, Dia shared that 48 hours later, doctors discovered the bacteria she had was life-threatening. Fortunately, it was brought under control with medical intervention, and she remained on antibiotics for 21 days. Meanwhile, her son had to undergo life-saving surgery just 36 hours after his birth.
The actress shared, "My son had a hole in his intestine and he went through surgery. They put a stoma on him — they basically pulled the intestine out of the body, and it was an exposed stoma. This was COVID also, I was allowed to visit him only twice a week. I could not hold him until he weighed 2.5 kg. I brought him home for exactly 20 days, and no nurse was willing to touch him because it was a really terrifying visual. So I handled the dressing. After he became 3.5 kg, he underwent another surgery that lasted 3–4 hours, and the stoma was corrected."
Dia also revealed that she is writing a book for her son, Avyaan, documenting her pregnancy journey and everything they went through during that challenging time.
