Veteran South actress Saroja Devi passed on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the age of 87. Reportedly, the actress died due to age-related ailments. She worked mainly in Kannada and Tamil movies, and had also been a part of a few Hindi and Telugu films. Many celebrities took to social media to mourn her demise.
Superstar Rajinikanth tweeted, "The great actress Saroja Devi, who won the hearts of millions of fans, is no longer with us. May her soul rest in peace."
Actress Simran shared on X, "The iconic Saroja Devi amma is no more, but her legacy in Indian cinema will remain eternal. I was blessed to share the screen with her in Once More, a moment of pride that feels even more precious today. My deepest respects and prayers. May her soul rest in peace. Om Shanti."
Chief Minister Of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, also took to X to mourn Saroja's demise. He tweeted, "The news of the passing of senior Kannada actress B. Sarojadevi has caused deep sorrow. She gained fame as the goddess of acting, having performed in approximately 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema. The moment one mentions Sarojadevi, her captivating performances in films like Kittur Chennamma, Babruvahana, and Annathangi come to mind. Her departure, having entertained audiences for decades through tasteful films, is a significant loss to Indian cinema. I pray that Sarojadevi’s soul finds peace. My condolences to her grieving family and fans. - Chief Minister @siddaramaiah."
Saroja Devi Movies
Saroja Devi started her career in 1955 with the Kannada movie, Mahakavi Kalidasa. In 1956, she made her Tamil debut, Thirumanam, and in 1957, she made her Telugu debut with the movie, Panduranga Mahatyam, which also starred N. T. Rama Rao in the lead role.
The veteran actress had done 26 movies with M. G. Ramachandran (MGR). Their pairing was considered superhit in the Tamil film industry. In 1959, she made her Hindi debut with a suppoorting role in Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala starrer Paigham.
In her career spanning seven decades, Saroja Devi starred in around 200 films. We at The Free Press Journal pray that her soul rest in peace.
