‘Killing The Mood’: Anurag Kashyap Is Upset With Smoking Disclaimers In Hollywood Film Sinners
Hollywood film Sinners was released in India on April 18, 2025. Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is upset with the smoking and drinking disclaimers in the movie. He stated, “In a mood piece such as Sinners, these disclaimers, such as smoking and drinking, yank the audience out of the immersive experience that the filmmaker had painstakingly created, killing the mood."

Hollywood film Sinners was released on April 18, 2025. The movie stars Michael B. Jordan, and it has received positive reviews from the critics and the audiences. However, Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is quite upset because of the smoking disclaimers in the movie. While talking to Indiewire, the filmmaker stated that the smoking and drinking disclaimers were ‘killing the mood’ of the film.
He stated, “In a mood piece such as Sinners, these disclaimers such as smoking and drinking yank the audience out of the immersive experience that the filmmaker had painstakingly created, killing the mood and the build-up in the process.”
Anurag Kashyap And Smoking Disclaimer History
Well, this is not the first time when Anurag had issues with smoking disclaimer in a movie. Many years ago, when his film Ugly was supposed to release, he had a fight with CBFC over smoking disclaimers. In fact, he had also moved to court for the same. But later he had to release Ugly with disclaimers.
Recollecting his situation, Kashyap said, “I argued that it was a fundamental threat to artistic expression. The case dragged on, and eventually, we had to abandon the fight and release it after our film got pirated. A filmmaker uses visuals, music and nuance to create something for the audience to immerse in. And before they could even enter that world, a jarring ad ruins the experience.”
Sinners Box Office Collection
While Sinners did well at the box office in overseas, in India, according to Sacnilk, the film only collected Rs. 6.62 crore. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
