A 26-year-old student from Telangana, G Praveen, was discovered dead with gunshot injuries in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, news agency PTI reported citing his family members. However, the family has stated that the circumstances of his death are still unclear. US authorities informed his relatives of the tragic news early Wednesday morning.
Who Was G Praveen?
G Praveen, a 26-year-old student from Telangana, was pursuing his MS in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He did his B.Tech in Hyderabad and came to the US in 2023 to pursue higher studies. His family hails from Ranga Reddy district, close to Hyderabad. Praveen was in India in December 2024 and returned to the US in January this year.
Praveen's Death and Uncertainty Surrounding the Cause
Arun, Praveen's cousin, informed PTI that the family was informed by friends that Praveen's body was found with gunshot injuries, although the cause of death is yet to be ascertained. Some reports indicate he may have been shot by unidentified assailants at a store, but this information has not been confirmed.
The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed its condolences on X (formerly Twitter) over the death of Gampa Praveen Kumar, a post-graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. "We are saddened by the untimely death of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a Post-graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Consulate is in contact with Praveen's family and the University, helping them with all possible support. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends of the departed," the statement read.
Third Incident Involving Indian Students from Telangana in Recent Months
Praveen's family has approached local politicians for help. This is the third incident in the last few months involving Indian students from Telangana being reportedly shot dead in the US, one from Khammam in November last year, and another from Hyderabad in January.
US authorities informed the family that the cause of death would be determined following an autopsy.
