Rajasthan's Udaipur BDS Student’s Suicide Sparks Protests; Note Alleges Mental Harassment By Staff

A final-year BDS student at Pacific Dental College in Udaipur, Shweta Singh from Jammu and Kashmir, died by suicide in her hostel room on Thursday night. Her roommate found her hanging around 11 pm, and she was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

A suicide note recovered from the scene alleges faculty members of prolonged mental harassment spanning two years, irregularities in exam schedules, arbitrary student failures, and extortion-like monetary demands. The note expressed severe distress over delayed exams and unfair treatment, alleging that passing was dependent on payments, while others were deliberately failed.

Following the tragedy, hundreds of students staged protests on campus, blocking the college gate and nearby roads, demanding justice and action against the accused staff. They alleged systemic pressure over attendance, examinations and unfair administrative practices.

"The matter is being investigated by the police, and they will take appropriate action based on their findings. The college management is also addressing the situation and will terminate the staff members involved," the director said, as reported by news agency PTI.

The Sukher police arrived at the site to maintain order and initiated an investigation. The college management assured strict action against the implicated faculty members. The student's body was moved to a mortuary, with a postmortem scheduled after her family arrives.
