According to the reports, the victims were Somvati (16) and her friend Durga (12). They were playing near a farmland when they accidentally fell into the borewell pit. Somvati’s body was recovered by 5 PM with the help of locals, while Durga’s body, trapped 20 feet deep was retrieved by SDRF personnel at around 12:45 AM after a challenging rescue operation.
According to SDM, the borewell was abandoned and left open after its casing was removed because of failure. Due to recent heavy rains, the pit was filled with water which created a hidden danger. Locals believe that one girl slipped and fell in and the other tried to save her but also drowned.
The children had accompanied Somvati’s parents to the fields where they were planting paddy. While playing, the girls wandered into a nearby field belonging to Ramesh Mishra where the mishap occurred.
The rescue was challenging due to the remote location was about 3.5 km away from the nearest village. The location had muddy and slippery paths. Officials and local police reached the site late evening. Both bodies were taken to Nagod Hospital for postmortem around 1 AM.
