Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A tehsildar accused of rape in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior, was granted bail just 3 days after surrendering in court, despite strong objections from 15 lawyers.

The accused Shatrughan Singh Chauhan had been on the run for over 5 months before he appeared at the Gwalior District Court on June 30 and surrendered.

Notably, Gwalior police had declared a reward of ₹5k for information leading to his arrest, and the survivor had also announced a personal reward of ₹50k.

Victim also has a son

An FIR was registered against Chauhan on January 15 at the Gwalior Women’s Police Station. The woman who filed the complaint alleged that Chauhan had promised to marry her, conducted a wedding ceremony in a temple, and lived with her as husband and wife. She also claimed Chauhan is the father of her son.

After the FIR was filed, Chauhan went missing. During his absence, the government transferred him to Betul district, but he never joined duty. As a result, he was suspended.

Earlier, Chauhan had applied for bail from the High Court, but it was denied. After months of absconding, he suddenly appeared in court and claimed he was not hiding but had gone on a religious pilgrimage, including the Kumbh Mela.

His swift bail has sparked debate and raised questions about the justice system.
