Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A criminal serving a sentence in Gwalior Central Jail for the murder of his father was shot dead by unidentified assailants in a car, near the Gwalior-Shivpuri border, as reported on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Ajay alias Leeladhar Singh of Shahar Naka. He was serving a life sentence at Gwalior Central Jail and had recently been released on parole. He was scheduled to return to prison on July 29.

According to taxi driver, Ajay hired his vehicle early in the morning to travel to Shivpuri. On the return journey, Ajay was accompanied by a young woman.

Near the area between Satanwada (Shivpuri) and Mohana (Gwalior), the woman asked to stop the vehicle for a bathroom break. During this stop a car approached and the occupants opened fire on Ajay who was seated in the taxi.

Despite being seriously injured, Ajay urged the driver to flee. Singh managed to drive away while being chased for some distance by the attackers. He then rushed the victim to the trauma center at Jai Rog Hospital where doctors declared Ajay dead upon arrival.

Police officials from Kampoo police station were informed, who have launched an investigation. The reason behind the murder remains unclear. Police are questioning the woman and the taxi driver. They have started reviewing CCTV footages of the route to identify the attackers.

Ajay’s criminal history and recent parole have raised suspicions of planned revenge attack. Authorities are yet to confirm the identities of the attackers.
