Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In the past 10 years, only 24 persons in Madhya Pradesh have come forward for organ donation, benefiting just 70 recipients.
Experts attribute this alarming shortfall to public distrust, fueled by organ trafficking rackets that exploit vulnerable donors and smuggle organs abroad.
Need to close legal loopholes to curb organ trade
Doctors stress the need to close legal loopholes to curb organ trade, balance the demand-supply gap, and strengthen donor protection to prevent exploitation.
Experts suggest that government involvement is crucial in promoting organ donation as a national mission. Officials such as tehsildars or other government representatives at donation sites could help build public confidence.

Currently, many people assume that doctors and counsellors discussing organ donation have links to illegal organ rackets for monetary gain.
Fear of illegal organ trade remains strong in the state
The Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA) 1994 was introduced to regulate organ donation and prevent commercial dealings. However, despite this legislation, the fear of illegal trade remains strong.
Dr Rakesh Bhargav, a member of the Madhya Pradesh State Advisory and Authorisation Committees for Organ Donation, told Free Press, "People don’t trust doctors and paramedics when they promote organ donation because of widespread organ rackets. If government officials like SDMs or tehsildars accompany doctors, it will instil faith in public and boost the campaign."
