Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): After an eight-year wait, Bhopal can jump from 5th position to the top two cleanest cities in the country in Swachh Survekshan-2024 and Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials credit the city’s performance to the success of Global Investors Summit (GIS) 2025, improvement in water plus and the public’s active participation in cleanliness drives.
The official announcement will be made on July 17 in a grand ceremony in Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu will declare the national rankings under Swachh Bharat Mission. The survey this year covered over 4,900 cities, with a competitive structure of 12,500 points higher than the 9,000-point framework used last year.
Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Harendra Narayan and Mayor Malti Rai have received official invitations to attend the award function. A team from Delhi has also started filming iconic and scenic locations across Bhopal to be showcased during the event.
Bhopal had earlier secured the second position in the 2016-17 surveys but gradually dropped in rankings over the following years. Last year, the city showed significant improvement and entered the top five. This year, Bhopal is set to reclaim its past glory and according to senior officials, there were even strong chances for it to bag the top spot. However, an unfortunate fire incident at the Adampur landfill during the survey reportedly impacted the city’s score.
How Bhopal made a comeback after 8 years
* The Survey team arrived immediately after the completion of GIS-2025 for which the city was completely transformed and cleaned thoroughly.
* Continuous actions taken following orders of the NGT that provides Bhopal 7stars in ODF and water plus last year which was only 5stars
* Record time submissions of Citizen Feedbacks with over 1.7 lakh responses submitted in just one month.
BMC Chairman expresses optimism
Chairman of BMC, Kishan Suryavanshi, expressed optimism, stating, ‘With the support of the public and the relentless efforts of the corporation, we expect Bhopal to secure the 1st position, especially in the ‘Water Plus’ category, where no other city can match our standards.’
Bhopal included for the Presidential Award
BMC Commissioner Narayan said that the cities which are nominated for the Presidential Award receive the top 3 awards and Bhopal has been included for the Presidential Award this time.
Each civic body to have 10-member team
Alongside Bhopal, other cities from Madhya Pradesh including Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Dewas, Budhni and Shahganj have also been invited to the event. Each civic body will be represented by a 10-member team. Swachh Bharat Mission Director Dr Parikshit Jhade is overseeing preparations for the award ceremony.
