Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): The district administration carried out an anti-encroachment drive near the famous Pitambara Temple in Datia on the orders of Collector on Saturday. The drive led to chaos in the area with local vendors stepping out for protests. A shopkeeper even tried to attempt suicide.
The action was led by SDM and involved a joint team of the administrative officials. More than 100 temporary encroachments, including shops of flower sellers, sweet vendors and others were removed using bulldozers. Tin sheds installed on permanent shops were also dismantled which resulted in damage to several businesses.

The authorities said the action was necessary to solve the issue of daily traffic jams around the temple. Officials confirmed that prior notices had been issued to remove encroachments, but vendors failed to remove the enroachments. Traders alleged that the action was sudden and accused the administration of ignoring their losses.
Collector and SP Suraj Kumar were present during the operation and said that anti-encroachment drives will continue wherever illegal encroachment is found. Protests and tension continued among local traders.
