Sheopur (Madhya Pradesh): A female cheetah brought from Namibia to Kuno National Park in Sheopur died on Saturday.

According to the forest department, 8-year-old Nabha was found injured in her soft release boma a week ago. She sustained a fracture in her left leg during hunting. An expert team of doctors treated her for a week, but she could not recover and succumbed to injuries.

The exact cause of death will be known from the postmortem report.

Only 9 adult cheetahs are left in Kuno.

After Nabha's death, only 26 cheetahs are left in Kuno. These include 9 adult cheetahs, including 6 females and 3 males. There are also 17 cubs born in India. According to the forest department, the remaining cheetahs and their cubs are healthy. Currently, 16 cheetahs are roaming freely in the open forest. They are hunting regularly.

According to officials, these cheetahs have adapted to the ecosystem of Kuno. All cheetahs have recently been given anti-ectoparasite medicine. Female cheetahs Veera and Nirva are healthy along with their cubs. The two male cheetahs kept in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary are also healthy.

Notably, after three cheetah cubs died last year in June, the central government set up an 11-member high-level steering committee to review the progress of the cheetah reintroduction programme.
