London: An Indian-origin nurse was stabbed with a pair of scissors at a Manchester hospital in the United Kingdom. The victim has been identified as Achamma Cherian. The incident took place on January 13 at the acute medical unit at Oldham Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester. The 57-year-old Cherian was attacked by a patient in his 30s when she was on duty, reported News18.
The accused has been identified as Mohammed Roman Haque. He stabbed Cherian on the neck. The accused reportedly got angry as he had to wait for a medical assessment. Haque was arrested after the incident and He was presented before the Magistrates’ Court and was reportedly charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.
Cherian has been working at Oldham Royal Hospital for over a decade. Oldham West MP Jim McMahon condemned the incident and called it a “senseless attack". Haque has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Minshull Street Crown Court on February 18, reported NewsX
UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting also condemned the incident. "Nurses are the backbone of our NHS and should be able to care for patients without fear of violence," Streeting said in his X post.
The attack sparked safety concerns for healthcare workers.
