In the wake of India's precision strikes on the terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir under ‘Operation Sindoor’, China has expressed concern over the escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday, May 7, urging both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilise the region.

Have a look at the entire statement here:

Beijing said it "regrets the military actions" taken by India in response to the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, including 25 tourists and one local resident. The Indian government confirmed that the operation targeted nine key terror infrastructure sites linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

“We are concerned about the current developments between India and Pakistan,” a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. “China calls on both sides to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid taking actions that may complicate the situation," they added.

China further urged both sides to "act with caution" and prioritise “peace and stability”, underscoring the need for restraint amid the ongoing tension.

India, for its part, has maintained that the strikes were “measured and non-escalatory,” aimed solely at terror infrastructure and not Pakistani military targets.

The Chinese comments underscore the geopolitical sensitivity surrounding the operation.
