Ashok Khemka, the 1991-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer known for his tough stance on corruption, retired on April 30 after a 34-year-long career. In a post on X that has since gone viral, Khemka wrote, “Today I complete my IAS career. Thanks to my family, colleagues and all well-wishers, without whose unflinching support this journey would not have been possible". He also added a word of apology in his retirement tweet, saying, I apologise if during this journey I rubbed anyone the wrong way".
So, who is Ashok Khemka?
Born in 1965 in Kolkata, now-retired IAS officer Khemka is best known for cancelling the mutation of the Robert Vadra–DLF land deal, a decision that brought him both public recognition and political heat.
His career, however, was also marked by repeated transfers. Not once or twice, Khemka was reportedly transferred 57 times, reflecting his fearless approach, before retiring as the Additional Chief Secretary in Haryana’s Transport Department, a post he took over in December 2024.
Notably, an IANS report pointed out that Khemka was often posted to roles deemed "low-profile."
In the last twelve years, he was transferred to the Archives Department four times — once under the Congress government in 2013 and three times during the BJP’s tenure.
Education
Ashok Khemka holds a B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Kharagpur and later earned a PhD in the same field from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). He also pursued an MBA in Finance and Business Administration, and later completed an LLB from Punjab University — reflecting a consistent commitment to academic excellence.
