Cyber Crime is a major concern in India. Piracy on the internet itself is a huge source of the mess. Cyber Cops are working constantly in developing a cyber army in itself to help curb this problem.
The
latest growth in this war is that the Indian Music Industry ( IMI), which has relentlessly worked to combat music piracy has now obtained Mandatory Injunction Orders from the Calcutta High Court, directing 387 Internet Service Providers ( ISPs) to block 104 Music Copyright Infringing websites within 36 hours of the date of the intimation.
The ISPs include Bharti Airtel Ltd, Vodafone India Ltd, Dishnet Wireless Ltd, Reliance Wimax Ltd, Hathway Cable & Datacom Pvt.
Ltd, Hughes Communications India Limited, Tata Teleservices Ltd, Reliance Communications Infrastructure Ltd, Wipro Ltd, Sify Technologies Ltd and BG Broadband India Pvt.
Ltd and 376 other ISPs.
Not only Internet Piracy but also Physical CDsalt39 sold on the streets is a major part of this racket. At a recent press conference in the city, one of the IMI official said that in the past few months, 22,000 raids were conducted, out of which 5,000 were convicted.
Vijay Lazarus, President, IMI, said, ” Piracy is an impending problem for Indias media and entertainment industry, causing losses of about Rs. 20,000 crore every year due to copyright infringement.
Recent estimates suggest that Indias Digital Music Market is in the range of Rs 5000 crore but only 7% of it is legitimate. We hope that such a move will help curb piracy and go a long way in supporting original music and its creators.” Savio Dalt39Souza, Secretary General, IMI, said, ” It has been long since the case that enforcing rights against online infringers have been difficult owing to the inherent nature of the worldwide web but IMI through its consistent and intensive operations have managed to obtain court orders prohibiting some prominent illegal music websites to stop operation within 36 hours of intimation.
IMI will continue to work towards combating piracy at each level to reduce the loss of revenue currently faced by the music industryalt39alt39. The Music Industry requests the common man to use legitimate websites and spread the necessary awareness.
