Three decades and counting—the Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million (PBMM) continues to set the gold standard in Indian horse racing. As the 36th edition gallops into Mahalaxmi Racecourse this Sunday (Feb 23), anticipation is at an all-time high.
Mumbai’s roads will converge at Mahalaxmi for India’s premier juvenile horse race. Second only to the Indian Derby, the PBMM has become a hallmark of elite racing, fuelled by the unwavering support of the Poonawalla family.
Zavaray S. Poonawalla reflects on its legacy:
"From the very first edition, PBMM has been an event of style and grandeur, drawing massive crowds. We started with a ₹1 million purse—now it’s ₹15 million, and I hope to take it to ₹50 million soon.”
Former RWITC Chairman Vivek Jain hails PBMM as the “Derby for younger horses”, with an elite dozen set to compete this year. Thanks to the Poonawallas' signature promotions, a crowd of nearly 10,000 spectators is expected.
Inspired by global icons like Australia’s Magic Million and Ireland’s Cartier Million, PBMM was launched to elevate Indian thoroughbred racing. Held annually on the third Sunday of February, this Grade 1, 1,400-meter race crowns India’s top three-year-old contender.

But PBMM is more than just a race—it’s a spectacle of sport, style, and celebration. With grand prizes, including a luxury car for those predicting the top four finishers, the event seamlessly blends high-stakes racing with fashion and festivities, cementing its place as India’s most glamorous equestrian event.
