Fast bowler Mohammed Shami broke the Indian record for the most wickets in ODI World Cups after taking five against Sri Lanka in Match 33 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Shami bagged his third World Cup five-for to become the highest Indian wicket take in World Cup history with 45 scalps from 14 innings.

He went past former India pacers Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath to achieve the feat. Both Zaheer and Srinath had taken 44 wickets in ODI World Cups.

He is the second bowler overall to bag three five-wicket hauls after Australian pacer Mitchell Starc.

Shami's 5 for 18 from just five overs earned him the Player of the Match award as India bowled out Sri Lanka for 55 to win by 302 runs and become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.

"Very happy (on becoming India's leading wicket-taker in World Cups) It's very important to be in rhythm in white ball cricket and hit the good areas.

"If you hit the good areas with the new ball you will get assistance off the pitch and for me length matters a lot. The kind of support we get from the crowd, I want to thank each and every one of them.

"We also get a lot of support whenever we travel outside India as well. The dressing room is in a very good space," Shami said after the match.

Shami also became just the second bowler in ODI history to bag three consecutive 4-plus wicket hauls more than once.

This is his second such streak after having returned 4/40, 4/16 and 5/69 in three consecutive innings at the 2019 World Cup. Only Waqar Younis has achieved this feat more often - three times (twice in 1990 and once in 1994).
