Team India overcame England's resistance to register their first Test win at Edgbaston as both sides will head to the Lord's with the five-match series now locked 1-1. Akash Deep continued his magical spell from day four, while Washington Sundar also stepped up to rip open England's batting line-up, pummelling them by a whopping 337-run margin.
Due to showers and wet outfield, there was a one and a half-hour delay for the start of play on day 5. Akash Deep, who castled Ben Duckett and Joe Root in a sharp spell on day four, sent Ollie Pope and Harry Brook packing to reduce the hosts to 83/5. England were in a familiar position on day three and went on to muster a 303-run partnership as Harry Brook and Jamie Smith.
England needed similar heroics from from both. Although Smith offered quite a bit of a resistance, Brook couldn't quite muster it. The Yorkshire batter got an almost unplayable delivery from Akash Deep, whose full delivery hit a crack and came back sharply. With the ball keeping low as well, the right-handed batter couldn't bring his bat down on time. His attempt for a review also went unsuccessful as umpire's call stood in India's favour.
Jamie Smith and Ben Stokes fight but India prove way too strong
After England succumbed to 83/5, Ben Stokes, who was on a king pair, joined the keeper-batter. The seam-bowling all-rounder played excellently for his 33, resisting for 74 deliveries but fell to Washington Sundar, moments before lunch.
Smith reached his half-century off 72 deliveries and played some sumptuous shots while Chris Woakes got some streaky boundaries. Akash Deep snaffled a fifer by getting rid of Smith for 88. The Bihar-born cricketer picked up six wickets in the second innings, rounding off 10 in the match.
The target of 608 proved too many bridges far, even for England's Bazball style of play.
