Team India Skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday recalled the days of playing cricket with R Ashwin at U-17 level. The skipper shared his thoughts during the press conference after Gabba test ended in draw. Addressing the media, Rohit said, “I've played cricket with Ash since U17. He was an opening batter back then.
A few years later, we all disappeared. And then suddenly I'm hearing about Tamil Nadu's R Ashwin taking five wickets, and I was wondering who this guy is. Because I played him as a batsman and suddenly he has turned out to be a bowler who's taking five-fors.”
He added, “One of the true match winners that India has ever seen. Whenever there was a crisis, we had to look upon Ash, and he was there to deliver for us. His records speak for themselves. He has been a servant of Indian cricket and has probably not left any stones unturned.” Rohit Sharma's social media tribute to R Ashwin
Besides recalling the cricket days with Ashwin at U17 level, Rohit took to social media and paid tribute to the veteran off-spinner. Rohit's Instagram caption read: "We've played together for so many years and created so many memories which I'll cherish forever. You've been a match-winner since match 1 & left a lasting impression on all the young bowlers coming through the ranks.
I'm sure we'll have a lot of upcoming young bowlers with the classic Ashwin action. You are a true OG & legend of Indian Cricket & World Cricket and this team will miss having you. Wishing the best to you & your lovely family for what lies ahead."
Gabba test draws due to bad weather
The final day was set to get the result but bad weather spoiled the rest of the day as India was ready to chase 275 runs after the hosts declared at 89/7. Bumrah shines again with the ball scalping 3 wickets while Siraj and Akashdeep picked 2 wickets each. India batted just 2.1 overs and bad light made the match call it end. So the Border- Gavaskar Trophy is tied by 1-1.
