The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new rule permitting “Serious Injury Replacements” during multi-day matches, starting with the 2025–26 season. The move comes after a series of injuries in the recent India vs England Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy.

During India vs England Test series, both teams found themselves a player short due to serious, non-concussion injuries. Rishabh Pant fractured his foot, and Chris Woakes dislocated his shoulder during the final Tests. Unlike concussion-related substitutions, current laws offered no option for replacing players suffering such injuries mid-game.

BCCI's updated rule on Serious Injury Replacements

As per the report the new rule will be applicable only in Multi-Day Domestic Competitions. Tournaments such as the Ranji Trophy and CK Nayudu Trophy (U19) will have this rule implemented.

However the rule will not be applicable in white-ball tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy or the Vijay Hazare Trophy, nor in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Key points from new rule

Injury Must Be Due to an External Blow

Only injuries such as fractures, dislocations, or deep cuts sustained within the field of play will be considered.

Like-for-Like Substitution

The replacement must be a similar player in role and skill set, drawn from the list of substitutes nominated at the toss.

Approval Process

The match referee, in consultation with the team doctor and on-field umpires, will have the final say on whether the injury qualifies for replacement.

Keeper-Specific Provision

In the case of wicketkeeper injuries, a substitute may be brought in from outside the original substitute list if no reserve keeper is available.

Status of the Replacement

Both the injured player and the substitute will be recorded as having officially participated in the match.

No Appeals Allowed

The match referee’s decision is final and binding, with no scope for appeal.

Penalties Transfer

Any warnings, suspensions, or penalty time assigned to the injured player will also apply to the replacement.

Have the match officials been update on rule change

The rule has already been introduced to match officials in a recent seminar in Ahmedabad. With the ICC reportedly considering similar changes, India’s domestic trial could pave the way for global adoption in the future.
