Following the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun preparations to resume the suspended IPL 2025 season. The temporary halt in cross-border tensions has opened the door for the tournament to potentially restart as early as May 15, subject to final approval from the Indian government.
The announcement came after escalating hostilities had forced the suspension of the league on May 10, just a day after the 58th match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was abandoned midway in Dharamsala.
Speaking to the Indian Express, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said that the BCCI is now chalking out the schedule and talking to all the stakeholders about resuming the tournament. However, he added that the government will give the final agreement on resumption.
“Ceasefire has just been announced. We now explore the possibility of resuming and concluding the IPL. If it is possible to conduct it immediately… We need to work out the venue dates and everything, and we would now be speaking to all the stakeholders, including team owners, broadcasters, and everyone involved and find a way as to how to move forward. Most importantly, we will have to consult with the government,” Dhumal said.
According to ESPNCricinfo with the ceasefire in place, all ten IPL franchises have shifted focus toward bringing back their overseas players and coaching staff, many of whom left India amid the uncertainty on Friday and Saturday. Some players in transit have been asked to delay further travel, while support staff preparing to leave have been told to hold off.
One franchise even urged its coaches not to board outbound flights on Sunday in anticipation of a quick restart. The Gujarat Titans, for instance, confirmed that only two of their overseas players—Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee had left the country, and efforts are being made to bring them back promptly.
New Venue options discussed
The remaining 12 league matches and 4 playoff games may be hosted in the southern cities of Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. This approach would help minimise travel and logistical issues in a condensed window.
