A 34-year-old woman died by suicide by hanging herself at her home in Pune's Ambegaon area after being harassed by her husband's paramour, officials said on Tuesday. The incident took place on May 10. The accused have been identified as Vikas Kokane (36) and Archana Ahire, they added.

According to the police, a case of abetment to suicide has been registered against the husband and his paramour at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station. The woman who died by suicide has been identified as Madhuri Kokane (34), a resident of Ashtavinayaknagar, Ambegaon Pathar. Her husband has been arrested by the police after her brother, Ashish Alhat (22), a resident of Dharashiv, filed a complaint in this regard.

"Madhuri got to know about her husband's extramarital affair with Archana. When she asked her husband about it, he abused her and beat her up. He also said, 'Bring me Rs 10 lakh for business, I will leave her.' Archana repeatedly called Madhuri and mentally tortured her by saying, 'Leave your husband, I want to marry him.' Fed up with this harassment, Madhuri died by suicide by hanging herself at her residence on Saturday, May 10, at around 2:30pm," the complaint states.

Savalaram Salgaonkar, Senior Police Inspector, Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station, speaking to The Free Press Journal, said, "The accused Vikas runs a private animal husbandry farm in Lonavala. When his wife got to know about the immoral relationship, she took such a step. The accused has been arrested."

Regarding the matter, a case has been registered at Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station under Sections 108, 351(2)(3), and 3(5) of the BNS Act. Further investigation is underway.
