HQ Southern Command commemorated the 54th Vijay Diwas, marking India’s historic victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Command War Memorial. Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, Ati Vishist Seva Medal, Army Commander, Southern Command, paid homage to the bravehearts by laying a wreath and recalling their supreme sacrifice in service to the nation. The ceremony was attended by 1971 War veterans, serving officers, school children, NCC cadets, and dignitaries, fostering a spirit of remembrance and gratitude.

Vijay Diwas, observed annually on 16 December, marks India’s historic victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, leading to the creation of Bangladesh. This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to India’s military prowess and strategic acumen.

The unprecedented event saw over 93,000 Pakistani troops laying down their arms, making it one of the most decisive military victories in modern history. The victory not only liberated millions of people from oppression but also established India as a key player on the global stage.

Adding to the solemn celebration, a 405 km Vijay Diwas Ultra Marathon, organized under the aegis of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa Area, was flagged off at the Command War Memorial. The marathon, which began on 6 December 2024 from Colaba, Mumbai, had 15 core runners, including notable participants such as Col Mandeep Singh Maan (Retd) and Captain Pooja Mehra (Retd), alongside veterans, school children, local citizens, and NCC cadets from cities along the route. The runners traversed three major cities of Maharashtra – Nashik, Ahilyanagar, and Kolhapur – before concluding in Pune.
