While the Muslims serving Warkaris in Pune during the Ashadi Wari procession made headlines, a disturbing event has come to light from the Camp area of Pune, where a Muslim woman allegedly threw bone and meat on Warkaris passing by her hut on June 21 in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, a complaint has been registered by Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar resident Akkalwant Rathod at Lashkar Police Station. The accused has been identified as Nasim Shaikh, a 57 year old woman resident of Solapur Road near Gaibipir Dargah, near Mamadevi Chowk in Pune's Camp area.
As per the complaint, "While the dindi was passing by the road in front of Shaikh’s hut near Mammadevi Chowk, she threw something on a Warkari named Maya Dhumal. When Maya asked the complainant what it was, he realised that it was a piece of red-colored meat. When Rathod went to confront her, she abused Rathod and said she is not afraid of anyone—‘do whatever you want.’"
Then Rathod informed a police officer on duty about the incident. She picked up the bone and threw it. She further told the Warkaris to move ahead and asked them to file a complaint, assuring them of action. After that, Rathod went to Lashkar Police Station and filed a complaint about it.
Ashadi Wari
Ashadi Wari is a very famous tradition in Maharashtra. It showcases religious and social harmony, with people from all classes, sects, and castes participating and serving the Warkaris. However, the recent incident has raised concerns. At present, the state government has banned the sale of meat and liquor in the places where the Wari passes, and there is a ban for the period in Pandharpur during the Wari.
The 'palkhis' (palanquins) of Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar are taken out by Warkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal) as part of their annual 'Wari' pilgrimage to reach the famous temple of Lord Vitthal at Pandharpur in Solapur district on Ashadhi Ekadashi.
