Three labourers have died in Pimpri-Chinchwad's Nigdi Pradhikaran area. The incident happened on Friday afternoon. While they were working in a chamber to change optical fibres, they suffocated and died.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sandeep Atole told The Free Press Journal, "Primary information is that the three people were installing optical fibre in a chamber. Their bodies have been shifted to Nigdi's Lokmanya Hospital."
Sources told their names are Lakhan Dhaware, Sahebrao Girsat, Datta Honale, all residents of Bijli Nagar, Chinchwad.
Senior Police Inspector Mahesh Bansode, in charge of Nigdi Police Station, told the media, "Today afternoon, around 3pm, near HDFC Bank, BSNL optic fibre work was ongoing. BSNL had created ducts for that. To do some work, four labourers went there."
He continued, "One labourer went down into the duct and felt suffocated. The two others followed and died. There was water in the duct; they suffocated and drowned. The fourth didn’t jump but called for help from others. Doctors declared all of them dead. We will investigate the matter further, and the BSNL officials will be interrogated."

A police source told The Free Press Journal, "This incident has been registered as an Accidental Death (AD) at Nigdi Police Station. The deceased, Honale, was a contractor who used to pay the other two. He had been in this line of work for the last couple of years. Currently, their postmortem report is pending, which will tell us the exact cause of death."
