As app-based cab services such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido operating in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Baramati started charging fares based on government-approved rates from May 1, the decision was made during a meeting of the Indian Gig Workers Front (IGWF).

Punekars irked

The new system has, however, irked Pune commuters, and many have taken to social media to voice their concerns. While some blamed drivers, others said it would affect the affordability and usage of cabs.

The decision also led to confusion among Pune residents, as they sought clarification about the new rule.

"Has anyone used Ola, Uber, or Rapido recently? Fares are 1.5x higher than the previous rate since they are using meters in cabs too. #Pune #Ola #Uber #Rapido @Uber_India @rapidobikeapp @Olacabs @RtoPune It’s high time to use metro or buses," wrote one user.

Another said, "Cab rates are 500-600 for Hinjewadi to Pune station; earlier it was 300/350 max."

"Why are your cab drivers in Pune asking to go by meter? Seems the advisory was only for auto rickshaws," asked another.

"Cabs booked on your app are calling & demanding a rate of Rs 30 per km in Pune. The reason given is that there is an update in company pricing policy, which is not yet visible on the app. How genuine is this claim by your drivers?" wrote another.

New fares

The new fare structure, implemented starting May 1, sets the base fare at Rs 37 for the first 1.5 km and Rs 25 for every additional kilometre. For example, a 10-km ride will now cost approximately Rs 249, while the current fare for the same distance, excluding surge pricing, is around Rs 175. However, fares may increase during peak traffic hours.
