Mumbai: Central Railway observed World Environment Day with great enthusiasm and a firm commitment to promoting environmental sustainability. To mark the occasion, a series of green initiatives were undertaken, including the formal launch of the ‘Go Green’ initiative, a pledge ceremony, and a tree plantation drive.

The Environment Pledge was solemnly administered at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Hall, Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager, Central Railway, along with all Principal Head of Department (PHOD), headquarters officers and staff. The pledge was administered via video conference by Member Traction and Rolling Stock (MTRS), Railway Board.

During the gathering, Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager, underscored the vital role of trees in sustaining life. He emphasized how tall trees, besides their ecological benefits, act as natural protectors during lightning by safely diverting electrical discharges away from populated areas. He also highlighted the unique qualities of native species such as the Banyan and Peepal trees, which possess immense ecological and environmental value.

The General Manager lauded the silent and selfless service rendered by trees to humanity, offering oxygen, shade, shelter, and serving as a crucial line of defense against the adverse impacts of climate change. He urged all railway personnel to incorporate environmentally responsible practices in their daily work and adopt sustainable methods to safeguard nature for future generations.

Later in the day, Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager, Central Railway, along with Principal Heads of Departments and senior officers, led a mass plantation drive during which 100 saplings were planted. A larger target of 500 saplings is set to be achieved in the coming days, reinforcing Central Railway's commitment to a greener future.

Meena also inaugurated an exclusive exhibition on eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. The exhibit featured edible cutlery made from pulses and showcased various types of plastics, educating visitors on their environmental impact. Designed to raise awareness and promote behavioural change, the exhibition encouraged all stakeholders to refrain from using plastic and to align with this year’s global theme — “End Plastic Pollution.”

Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager, Central Railway, also led an awareness rally at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus precincts. The rally saw enthusiastic participation from railway staff, Bharat Scouts & Guides, and the Civil Defence team. The objective was to create awareness about environmental conservation and the urgent need to end plastic pollution.

A similar rally was organized at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus station participated by the Station Staff, where passengers were sensitised about the significance of World Environment Day and encouraged to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.

The observance of World Environment Day by Central Railway served as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we share in preserving our planet and the steps each individual can take toward building a greener and healthier future.
