Sachin Ashok Sharma, a 2008-batch Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer and currently Secretary to the General Manager, Western Railway, has etched his name in the history books by becoming the first Indian Railways officer to successfully complete the Ironman Triathlon—one of the world’s most grueling endurance challenges.
Held recently in Port Macquarie, Australia, the Ironman Triathlon comprises a 3.8 km open-water swim, 180 km of cycling, and a 42.2 km full marathon—all to be completed within a 17-hour time limit. However, due to adverse weather and safety concerns, race organizers were forced to cancel the swim segment on race day. Undeterred, Sharma began the race with the 180 km cycling leg, tackling a route known for its stunning beauty and punishing climbs, including the notorious Matthew Flinders Drive, with a 17% gradient that challenges even seasoned athletes. He completed the race with a total time of 12 hours, 26 minutes, and 52 seconds.

"The final marathon run took participants through the picturesque town of Port Macquarie, along the Hastings River, where cheering crowds celebrated each runner’s determination. As Sharma crossed the finish line, the announcer declared, “Sachin, you are an Ironman,” marking a proud moment for Indian Railways" said an official of WR.
Displaying exemplary commitment to the spirit of the Ironman, Sharma later completed the 3.8 km swim solo in the cold waters off Geelong in the Southern Pacific Ocean—thereby symbolically fulfilling the full Ironman distance and honouring the legacy of the event.
This achievement is the latest milestone in a remarkable endurance career. Sharma has previously completed several high-altitude and ultra-distance races, including the Ladakh Full Marathon (42 km) in 2022 and 2023, the Khardung La Challenge (72 km), the Comrades Marathon (86 km) in South Africa, and the Silk Route Ultra Marathon in Ladakh. His dedication to fitness and sports echoes the spirit of the Fit India Movement, promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Confirming the development a senior official of Western Railway, congratulated Sharma on his incredible achievement, calling it an inspiration for others within and outside the Indian Railways. “ Sharma's story is a testament to grit, perseverance, and excellence,” he said.
