Western Railway Celebrates 53 Glorious Years Of Iconic Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani Express At Mumbai Central Station

Western Railway’s iconic Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani Express celebrated a landmark occasion as it completed 53 glorious years of uninterrupted service since its maiden run on May 17, 1972. Mumbai: Western Railway’s iconic Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani Express celebrated a landmark occasion as it completed 53 glorious years of uninterrupted service since its maiden run on May 17, 1972. An event was held at Mumbai Central station to mark this historic milestone, attended by rail enthusiasts, passengers, and Western Railway officials.

The commemorative celebration was filled with vibrant energy and nostalgia. The train was decked with flowers and festoons, symbolizing its rich legacy. A cake-cutting ceremony and festive fanfare marked the send-off of the train, celebrating over five decades of excellence in connecting India’s financial capital Mumbai with its national capital, New Delhi.

Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, Vineet Abhishek, shared the significance of this milestone. “The Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani Express has served the nation with pride, offering speed, comfort, and punctuality. It is a symbol of Indian Railways’ commitment to excellence,” he stated.

According to WR, the train covers the distance between Mumbai and New Delhi in around 15 hours and 32 minutes, traversing seven states. In the return direction, from New Delhi to Mumbai, it takes 15 hours and 40 minutes. It was the second Rajdhani Express to be introduced on Indian Railways, following the launch of the Howrah–Delhi Rajdhani in 1969.

"This legendary train continues to be a symbol of speed, service, and pride for Indian Railways, setting benchmarks in long-distance travel. The 53rd-anniversary celebration was not just a tribute to its past but also a reaffirmation of its continued legacy on the tracks of modern India" said an official of WR.
