Weather Update: Mumbai Braces for Earliest Monsoon In Decades As Rain Advances Rapidly Across Maharashtra

If the monsoon hits Mumbai on May 28, it will be the earliest onset of monsoon for the city till date. As per IMD data, in the years 1956, 1962 and 1971, the monsoon arrived in Mumbai on May 29.

On May 25, the monsoon arrived in Maharashtra, 10 days earlier than its official arrival day, marking one of the earliest onset of monsoon. The southwest monsoon is expected to hit Mumbai in the next two days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. “The monsoon has reached up to Dapoli in Maharashtra as of Sunday evening and is rapidly advancing towards the north,” IMD officials said.

This also marks one of the earliest monsoon arrivals in Mumbai, against the official date of June 11. If the monsoon hits Mumbai on May 28, it will be the earliest onset of monsoon for the city till date. As per IMD data, in the years 1956, 1962 and 1971, the monsoon arrived in Mumbai on May 29. This will also be the earliest onset of monsoon for the island city in the last 15 years. With the advancement of monsoon, a Yellow alert for rainfall and thunderstorms continues for Mumbai and its metropolitan regions.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Mumbai continued to witness cloudy weather. As per IMD Mumbai forecast of May 25, for the next 48 hours, Mumbai city and suburbs will continue to experience generally cloudy sky with possibility of thunderstorms accompanied with lightning, gusty winds (40-50 kmph) and moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places. The maximum and minimum temperatures will remain around 31 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.  

This year, Mumbai has already received more than average May rainfall. As of May 25, Colaba observatory recorded 159.2 mm and Santacruz observatory recorded 164.3 mm of rainfall. In the last 24 hours, the observatories recorded 35 mm and 26.8 mm of rainfall, respectively.

With the onset of monsoon in the state, an Orange Alert is given for south Konkan, including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The other districts that are under Orange Alert for ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ include Pune, Satara and Kolhapur. The other regions in the state are under Yellow alert for the next couple of days, including the Marathwada and Vidharbha regions.
