Union Budget 2025: ₹23,778 Crore Allocated For Railway Projects In Maharashtra, Boosting Infrastructure And Expansion

The state is witnessing a massive railway infrastructure boost, with 47 projects spanning 6,985 km, worth a staggering Rs1,58,866 crore, currently in progress.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced an allocation of Rs 23,778 crore for railway projects in Maharashtra as part of the Union Budget.

The state is witnessing a massive railway infrastructure boost, with 47 projects spanning 6,985 km, worth a staggering Rs1,58,866 crore, currently in progress. Addressing the media, the minister highlighted Maharashtra's significant strides in rail network expansion, stating that 2,105 km of new tracks have been laid since 2014—a length greater than the entire railway network of Malaysia.

Under the ambitious Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) redevelopment project, several key works are underway, including foundation work for the new Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) building, the Long Distance Node building, and the Officer’s Rest House (ORH).Additionally, the refurbishment of the Heritage building, the Main Line building, and the Traffic Accounts building is ongoing.

Similarly, piling work for the Long Distance Concourse over platforms at CSMT is also advancing.Apart from that over a dozen railway expansion projects are underway across Mumbai and its suburban areas. These include the 5th and 6th lines between Kurla and Parel, which are 45% complete and targeted for completion by December 2025; the Mumbai Central - Borivali 6th line project, which is 64% complete; and the Virar - Dahanu 3rd and 4th lines, which are 30% complete, with a target completion date of December 2026.Similarly, land acquisition is in progress for the Harbour Line Extension project up to Borivali. Utility shifting work is also underway for the Borivali - Virar 5th and 6th lines. The Panvel - Karjat suburban corridor is over 68% complete.

For the convenience of passengers, as part of the Amrit Bharat Stations Project, 132 stations across Maharashtra are being modernized at a cost of Rs 5,587 crore. The project includes key stations such as Andheri, Bandra Terminus, Borivali, Byculla, Charni Road, Dadar, Dahisar, Diva, Grant Road, Jogeshwari, Kalyan, Kandivali, Kurla, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Kanjurmarg, Lower Parel, Matunga, Malad, Marine Lines, Mumbra, Mumbai Central, Panvel, Parel, Prabhadevi, Sandhurst Road, Thakurli, Thane, Wadala Road, Vidyavihar, and Vikhroli.

The entire railway network in Maharashtra is now 100% electrified, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.According to an official , capacity augmentation is in progress for major railway terminals in Mumbai, including CSMT, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Mumbai Central.The minister also confirmed that work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train is progressing at full speed, signaling a major leap in India's high-speed rail infrastructure.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also stated that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was delayed due to the Uddhav Thackeray-led government in Maharashtra.
