Thane: A 34-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a speeding container on Bhiwandi Bypass Road on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Umashankar Mahesh Sharma (32), a porter who worked in a furniture shop in the Pipeline area of Bhiwandi, and he originally belonged to Siddhartnagar district in Uttar Pradesh.
The incident took place on Bhiwandi Bypass Road near the rickshaw stop location on Tuesday at 11:30, when Sharma was standing near the rickshaw stand and a reckless driver of a container who was heading from Kalyan to Bhiwandi drove by and hit him. He came under the wheels of the container and was crushed.
Locals and bystanders rushed to the spot and promptly informed the local police station. He was taken to a private Hospital in Bhiwandi, where he was declared dead on arrival. Following this incident, the container driver fled the scene after leaving a container.
Ramanad Prajapati, a relative of the deceased, told FPJ that Sharma arrived in Bhiwandi from Uttar Pradesh two days ago. He went to Ulhasnagar with furniture items for delivery on May 3 and later returned in the evening.
Subsequently, he went to the Bypass without informing anyone and was later informed by the police that he had an accident. I immediately alerted the other relatives and rushed to a private hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Later, the dead body was sent to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi for post-mortem.
Prajapati further added that Sharma was survived by a six-year-old daughter and wife in Uttar Pradesh. I informed his wife and daughter about it and asked them to send Sharma's body to their native place after collective donations for transportation arrangements. However, family members told me to do the final rites in Bhiwandi due to poverty.
The investigating officer, Vaibhav Chuble, from Kongaon Police Station said, "The driver of the container ran away after the accident. We seized the container and traced the driver later and arrested him. We will produce him in court on Wednesday."
