An attempt was made to hack the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) website by an unknown individual on Saturday afternoon. Upon discovering the issue, UMC contacted a cyber expert to investigate how the hacking attempt was carried out. Fortunately, all data and security systems remain intact and secure.

UMC's Public Relations Officer, Ajay Sable, confirmed the hacking attempt and stated that cyber experts are currently probing the matter. The incident came to light when a screenshot suggesting the hack was received, prompting officials to immediately inform senior authorities and seek expert assistance.

An official from UMC stated that the website is currently safe, with no signs of an actual breach. The screenshot was the only indication of a potential attack. Cybersecurity professionals are now working to determine the origin of the screenshot and identify the individual who shared it in a WhatsApp group.

In light of the incident and the increasing number of cybercrimes, UMC has issued a cybersecurity alert to Ulhasnagar residents, urging them to take precautions against cyber threats. Cyber attackers often target computer systems, networks, or data with the intention of stealing information.

UMC advised citizens to take the following cybersecurity measures:

Use Strong Passwords: Avoid simple passwords; instead, create strong ones using a mix of numbers and special characters.

Avoid Suspicious Content: Do not click on unknown links, attachments, or offers, as these could lead to data or financial loss.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): A password alone is insufficient—use OTPs or app-based authentication for added security.

Keep Software Updated: Regularly update your operating system, antivirus software, and applications to stay protected.

Use a VPN on Public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi is insecure—using a VPN helps encrypt your data.

Back Up Data Regularly: Save important data on the cloud or an external drive to prevent loss.

Cybersecurity Training for Organizations:
UMC emphasized the need for businesses and organizations to train employees on identifying and avoiding cyber threats. Staff should be cautious when handling emails, clicking links, or downloading software.
