Thane: In a recent crackdown on environmental violations, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) sealed seven spice mills in the bustling Mahatma Phule Mandai area due to non-compliance with noise pollution regulations. The mills had continued operations despite receiving notices in March 2025 to reduce noise levels and implement corrective measures.
These mills were found to be generating noise well above the permissible limits, largely due to outdated machinery and a lack of proper soundproofing. Their continued operation had become a source of constant disturbance in the market area, which is surrounded by residential buildings and small businesses.
An X post shared by the Thane Municipal Corporation highlighted the sealing of seven spice mills in Thane, stating: "The Thane Municipal Corporation has sealed seven spice mills in Mahatma Phule Mandai due to noise pollution. The mills were sealed for non-compliance with noise pollution control measures, as they continued to operate despite notices issued in March 2025."

The mills will remain sealed until they take the necessary steps to meet regulatory requirements. The civic body is expected to continue its inspections across other markets and commercial areas in the city to identify similar violations.
Local residents and vendors had reportedly raised concerns over the excessive noise for several months. The mills, located in a densely populated zone, contributed to rising noise levels throughout the day, affecting the health and well-being of people in the vicinity.
This move has been largely welcomed by local residents who have long demanded action against persistent noise pollution in the area. The initiative underscores the importance of balancing economic activity with environmental responsibility in growing urban centres like Thane.
