Mumbai: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court chose not to consider a request contesting a Bombay High Court ruling that denied a halt to the building of a passenger jetty and terminal near the Gateway of India. A panel headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai highlighted that the High Court will consider the case on June 16. The Chief Justice emphasized the advantages of a coastal road initiative, pointing out decreased travel durations from South Mumbai to Versova.

The bench was informed by Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati that seven essential approvals for the project had been obtained. The petitioners contended that the project serves only a specific portion of society and was advanced without public consultations or necessary approvals. They expressed worries that it would primarily serve VIPs, a statement Bhati denied, claiming its purpose is to assist everyday travellers.

The Chief Justice noted the widespread resistance to local infrastructure initiatives, indicating a "not in my backyard" attitude common among the public towards essential advancements. In the end, the bench opted not to consider the plea, since the High Court is already dealing with the matter, and urged for a quick resolution. The High Court had earlier indicated that building could move forward, as long as it corresponds with the results of the current petition, while the government guaranteed that a wall designated for removal would stay until the upcoming hearing date.
