Star Health Insurance Hit With ₹49 Crore GST Demand Across Multiple States For Alleged Violations

The private insurer Star Health and Allied Insurance Co Ltd has been slapped with 25 tax demand orders across its zonal offices in Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Karnataka of Rs 49 crores including penalties by the Goods & Services Tax (GST) and Central Excise authorities.

Mumbai: The private insurer Star Health and Allied Insurance Co Ltd has been slapped with 25 tax demand orders across its zonal offices in Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Karnataka of Rs 49 crores including penalties by the Goods & Services Tax (GST) and Central Excise authorities.

According to the exchange filing by Star Health Insurance, the tax demands pertain to alleged violations, including non-payment of GST on coinsurance transactions.

“violations, including non-payment of GST on coinsurance transactions as a follower, non-disclosure of such transactions in statutory returns and failure to issue invoices for coinsurance services,” confirmed a senior GST official.

The Star Health Insurance m Haryana office got five tax demand orders amounting to Rs 4.9 crore from the Office of the Additional Commissioner of GST & Central Excise, Gurgaon (North) Ward, while Delhi office was issued four orders worth Rs 4.7 crore from GST authorities in Delhi South.

Star Health’s Mumbai and Andheri East offices received five tax orders totaling Rs 19.4 crore, the highest among all states and Tamil Nadu office got five tax demand orders worth Rs 16.2 crore were issued by Chennai-North GST authorities.

The company’s Telangana office in Secunderabad was served five orders amounting to Rs 3.8 crore, while its Karnataka office received a single tax order worth Rs 12.8 lakh from Bengaluru West GST authorities.

Star Health has stated that it will challenge the tax demands by filing an appeal and a writ petition with the appropriate authorities based on legal counsel’s advice.
