Shahapur: In a tragic road accident on the newly-inaugurated stretch of the Samruddhi Expressway, two individuals lost their lives and seven others were injured when a cruiser jeep collided with a container truck early Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 5 am between Vashind and Amne in Shahapur taluka, within the jurisdiction of the Vasind Police Station.

Details On The Casualties

The deceased were identified as Abdul Pasha Shaikh (65) and Jaheed Siddiqui (40). Among the injured are two children, three women and two men, some of whom have sustained serious injuries. According to reports quoting the medical team at Indira Gandhi Hospital in Bhiwandi, two to three victims are in critical condition and are under close medical observation.

How Did The Accident Happen?

The cruiser jeep, which was en route to Bhiwandi from Pathardi in Ahmednagar district, reportedly rammed into the rear end of a slow-moving container truck heading towards Mumbai. The driver of the jeep, identified as Maruti Gunjal, is suspected to have lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to drowsiness or slippery road conditions caused by early morning rain. The impact of the collision was so severe that two passengers died instantly, while six others, including the driver, sustained injuries, reported Lokmat Times.

Following the accident, Shahapur Highway Police and medical response teams stationed along the Samruddhi Expressway quickly arrived at the scene. Emergency personnel transported the injured to the Bhiwandi sub-district hospital using government ambulances. Later, those with more serious injuries were shifted to a private hospital in Bhiwandi for advanced care.

The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination after police officials completed the panchnama. The Vashind Police have launched a formal investigation into the case. Initial findings indicate that the driver may have dozed off at the wheel, leading to the collision with the truck during the early hours of the day.
