Navi Mumbai: A yellow alert has been issued for Raigad district from May 15 to May 18, as per the Regional Meteorological Department in Mumbai. The district is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and wind speeds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h during this period. In response, the district administration has urged citizens to take necessary precautions and remain alert.

District Collector Kishan Jawale has advised people to stay informed about weather conditions and contact the district control room in case of emergencies. He emphasized the importance of preparedness during the alert period to ensure public safety.

The India Meteorological Department’s official website, https://mausam.imd.gov.in, provides daily weather updates. "Citizens are urged not to believe or circulate unverified information and are encouraged to verify any news through official sources. For assistance, they can contact the District Control Room at 8275152363, 02141-222118, or the toll-free emergency number 1077," a notification issued by the Raigad collector, said.

During thunderstorms, citizens are advised to switch off and unplug electrical appliances such as televisions and computers to prevent damage. The use of landlines and mobile phones should be avoided when lightning is occurring, the notification emphasised. People are strongly discouraged from stepping outdoors during thunderstorms, and those already outside should seek immediate shelter in a safe place away from electric poles.

The notification further mentioned that standing under tall trees or near metal objects during lightning is considered dangerous. Individuals caught in open areas should crouch down with their heads between their knees and avoid contact with metal. The administration has recommended downloading the ‘Damini’ mobile app to receive real-time lightning alerts.

"During rain accompanied by lightning, citizens should avoid sheltering under trees, refrain from talking on mobile phones, and stay away from electrical appliances. Taking shelter in a pucca (solid) house or building is advised in such conditions," the administration notified further.

The District Disaster Management Authority has appealed to all residents to safeguard their lives and property during this yellow alert period and to cooperate fully with the administration.
