17 houses completely damaged
Around 17 houses were completely damaged and it is difficult to assess how many people are trapped under the debris, said Ravi Prakash, a senior commandant of NDRF. “There is 30-40 feet of debris and the rescue operation is being carried out without any machinery,” he said.
A base camp has been set up in Manivali village from where people have to walk to the landslide site.
“As the village is on a hill, it is not easily accessible. NDRF teams are facing challenges in deploying heavy machinery,” said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde after visiting the site. Two defence force helicopters were deployed for rescue operation and even a helipad was constructed at the disaster site, he said. However, they could not be used because of bad weather.
Relief of ₹5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased
Shinde announced relief of ₹5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. The government will bear all the expenses for the treatment of the injured, said Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare, who visited the hospital.
State Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister Chhagan Bhujbal has directed the district administration to provide food packets from nearby Shiv Bhojan thali centre to all the villagers, till normalcy is restored. They will also be provided five litres of kerosene oil for cooking.
