The Panvel Municipal Corporation marked the 79th Independence Day with a patriotic ceremony at the city’s Martyrs’ Memorial Park, where the national flag was hoisted by Tarabai Baban Dharane, a descendant of a freedom fighter, in honour of the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle.
The event saw the presence of MLA Prashant Thakur, MLA Vikrant Patil, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Mangesh Chitale, Sub-Divisional Officer Pawan Chandak, Tehsildar Vijay Patil, Opposition Leader Pritam Mhatre, Additional Commissioner Ganesh Shete, Transport Manager Kailas Gawde, former House Leader Paresh Thakur, and several ex-corporators.
Symbolic Tradition to Honour Sacrifices
Addressing the gathering, MLA Prashant Thakur said the tradition of inviting descendants of freedom fighters to hoist the flag was a symbolic gesture to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten. “Their courage and dedication will always inspire us as we move towards building a strong and prosperous nation,” he said.
Defining True Patriotism
MLA Vikrant Patil emphasized that patriotism lies in dedicated service to society. “True love for the country comes from fulfilling our duty towards the community with sincerity. There is no greater definition of patriotism,” he remarked.
Salute to the Tricolour
The ceremony included a salute to the tricolour by the Municipal Corporation’s Fire and Safety Department and the local police.

Senior municipal officials, including Deputy Commissioners Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate, Prasenjit Karlekar, Ravikiran Ghodke, Mangala Malve, Swaroop Kharge, Assistant Subodh Thanekar, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anand Gosavi, Chief Accountant Mangesh Gawde, Chief Auditor Nilesh Nalavade, City Engineer Sanjay Katekar, and Chief PRO Dr. Raju Patodkar, joined municipal staff, freedom fighters’ families, and citizens in the celebration.
